Lecture by the Rector

15th April 2010

“No Longer Number One: America and the Developing Giants”

While in New York ahead of Oxford's North American Reunion and the Exeter College Dinner, the Rector will be giving a talk as part of a Weill Cornell Medical College lecture series on global health and globalization. Exonians, particularly young alumni, are invited to attend this talk.

Synopsis:
The global downturn has accelerated the growth of a number of large developing countries relative to the developed world. In particular, China will this year become the world’s largest importer, and could well overtake the US to become the leading producer of manufactured goods in the next five to seven years. It will become the world’s largest economy within a decade. A couple of decades later, India will probably enter the same league.

This talk examines these trends and suggests some of the changes in politics, diplomacy and culture that may flow from them. We hope to see you there. You can now view the invitation online. If you have any questions about this event, please contact the Development Office (+44 1865 279619).
