Choral Awards

Choral Awards are held by twelve members of the choir, who are called Academical Clerks. They are the core of the choir and are respected and well-supported members of the College, receiving an annual honorarium, free singing lessons, free formal meals after each sung service and additional payment for weddings. They sing to a high standard and good sight-reading skills are essential as the turnover of music is rapid. Becoming an Academical Clerk provides a great opportunity to sing regularly at a high level, but the commitment still allows time for all aspects of student life. Members of the choir read a variety of subjects and are often academically accomplished. Many also play and sing with a wide range of Oxford-based choirs and orchestras. For an idea of the sort of repertoire sung, visit the Music List on the Events page.

Choral Trials for Academical Clerks take place in September, when candidates will be asked to perform a short piece and take a sight reading test. For further information on the application procedure and the number of awards available for the coming year, please click here.

The Chaplain and Organ Scholars are always happy to be contacted by prospective students to answer questions or arrange visits. There are also opportunities for School Choirs to sing Evensong in the Chapel. Please do get in touch if you would like more information.

Students of Exeter and the University at large, whether undergraduate or postgraduate, are welcome to express interest in joining the choir at any time as Choral Bursars, subject to demand. Vacancies arise particularly frequently in the Tenor and Bass parts. As with Academical clerkships, good vocal qualities and a high standard of sight-reading and general musicianship is required. Choral Bursars receive an annual stipend as well as free meals after every sung service. For details of vacancies and to arrange an audition, please apply to the Organ Scholars (Joshua Hales or George de Voil).
