Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Library open?
The Library is open 24/7 during term time to all members of Exeter College.
How do I borrow a book from the Library?
The Library has a self service loans system, located just inside the Library door. The system works by swiping your University card barcode and then swiping the book barcode, usually to be found on the inside of the front cover. You can then print out a slip showing when the book is due for return.
How do I ask for a book to be bought for the Library?
Check in SOLO that we don’t already have the book in the Library, print out a book suggestion form, fill in the details, take it to your tutor to sign and then hand it to an Exeter College Librarian.
I don’t understand how the books are filed on the shelves, can you explain?
The Library uses the Bliss classification system. Go to the Bliss Classification Association website if you want to find out more.
How many books can I borrow from the Library, and for how long?
You can borrow up to 20 books for a term, unless anyone requests one of those books back, when you will get an e-mail requesting its return.
My swipe card doesn’t seem to work at the Library door
Try swiping it more than once and if it won’t give you access, go and check with the porters that your card is validated.
How do I renew my books?
You can renew your books online by going to OLIS, patron functions, where you will be asked for your patron barcode and password.
