Message from the Rector

Welcome to Exeter College. This is one of Oxford's liveliest and most exciting colleges. We have some world-class academics, an excellent exam record, a beautiful chapel, Oxford's finest view (from our Fellows' Garden), a new boat for our rowers, and a steady stream of interesting speakers coming in throughout the term. We are the college where J.R.R. Tolkien, Alan Bennett, Roger Bannister and Philip Pullman were undergraduates - and where the fictitious Inspector Morse had a fatal heart attack.

My own background is in journalism: I was a senior editor on the staff of The Economist magazine for 20 years, and I now try to use my contacts from that time to widen the horizons of Exeter students. I wrote a number of books, including one on the environment called "Costing the Earth" and another on the economic and social implications of the internet, called "The Death of Distance". I chaired the Economic and Social Research Council for six years until 2007 and was President of the British Association (2005-2006).

I look forward to meeting you if you visit the College or come to study here.
