College Network

Exeter College is obliged to ensure that all machines using the Oxford University Network reach a minimum level of security and compliance. Further information on this is available at the Exeter College Computing Fellow's Regulations page.

To achieve this we operate an automatic network registration system that assesses any connected computer to ensure conformity.

What it checks for

The system ascertains whether your machine is using up to date antivirus software and that latest system updates have been installed. We advise checking that these are in place and up to date before beginning the process.

For those requiring antivirus software OUCS provide Sophos free to University members. Information on Sophos, including how to download and install can be found at the OUCS Antivirus pages.

If you are going to be using Skype during your stay at Exeter we ask that it is configured in a particular way. The following page details how to setup Skype so that it works in the permitted manner.

Connection and Registration

To begin the process please plug your Computer into an available network port in your room. When you attempt to access the Internet, you should be automatically directed to the Exeter College Network Registration pages.

You will be asked to fill in a small number of details to allow the system to recognise your computer and to identify who it belongs to. If you are a member of Exeter College please select the 'Resident' option, where you will be asked to enter your Exeter College login (those used to access the PCs in the Exeter College Computer Rooms). If you are not a member of Exeter College then please select the 'Guest' option where you will be required to enter Visitor details to continue the process.

System Scan

The System Scan requires you to download and run a piece of software that assesses your Computer to ensure it meets College requirements to use on the network.

Once you have passed the scan you will be able to access the Internet.

If you have any questions or experience any problems in regards to registering your Computer please either visit the Computing Department or email it-help@exeter.ox.ac.uk.
