The Mary Frances Cairncross Scholarship

Following the generous gifts from the family and friends of Mary Frances Cairncross (1919–1998), Exeter College is delighted to offer the Mary Frances Cairncross Scholarship in her name and memory.

This Scholarship (linked to a Clarendon Award) is available to students from economically disadvantaged countries (as judged by per capita GDP) wishing to read for a graduate degree at Exeter College, University of Oxford.

The Scholarship is tenable from 1 October 2011 for one year, renewable for a further two years, and is worth £13,590 per annum (the full recommended living allowance) in addition to the Clarendon Award. The Scholarship is open to any student who:

  • is a citizen of an economically disadvantaged country, and
  • who is resident in that country, and
  • has not previously studied overseas, and
  • wishes to read for a graduate degree at Exeter College, Oxford, and
  • has been accepted into the University of Oxford onto such a graduate course, and
  • commits to remaining at Exeter College for the duration of his or her course.

Scholars will be expected to return to their country of origin and work there for long enough to make a contribution to that country.

Applicants for the Mary Frances Cairncross Scholarship should apply directly to the University for a Clarendon Award, marking Exeter as their preferred College. If an applicant is successful in attaining a Clarendon Award and meets the above criteria, he or she will automatically be considered for the Mary Frances Cairncross Scholarship. The deciding committee will take into account academic merit, financial need and non‒academic achievements.
