Student Support

Exeter College is very proud of the extensive support it can offer students to relieve financial hardship, to support academic and to subsidise extra-curricular activity.

Hardship Support

In addition to Oxford Opportunity Bursaries, Exeter College is able to offer a comprehensive range of support for students facing financial hardship in the form of:

Many of these have been funded by the generosity of Old Members, Parents and Friends of the College.

Exonian Bursaries

These are series of bursaries ranging in value from £500-£1,000 funded by Old Members, Parents and Friends who give to the College's Annual Fund. Students are encouraged to apply for these as needed, usually once a year, and undergraduates and graduate are eligible.

Hardship Grants

These grants range in value from £100-£1,500 and are funded from an Assistance Fund created in the 1920s to specifically help undergraduates and graduates facing financial hardship.

Named Hardship Bursaries

These Bursaries have been created by Old Members of the College in honour or in memory of people who have played an important role in their lives. These Bursaries are awarded towards the end of the first term of each academic year. Recipients are required to write a brief letter of thanks to the donor.

Academic Support

Academic Fund

Exeter College is able to offer support for students who need to travel to conferences, undertake field work, buy essential equipment, etc.

Vacation Study Grants

Undergraduates who have to spend part of their vacations on academic work in Oxford, or elsewhere away from their homes, may be eligible for a vacation study grant, provided by the College Assistance Fund.

Other Student Support

Exeter College is proud to be able to support a wide range of other student activity. Many sports and other student societies are subsidised by grants from the Annual Fund. In addition, the following support is available:

North American Travel Scholarship

This annual scholarship of £2,000 is awarded to a student who wishes to travel across the USA and Canada meeting and staying with Old Members of the College. The Scholarship is advertised in early Hilary Term and the Scholar works closely with the Development Office to develop an itinerary and contact Old Members. This is a competitive scholarship based on academic merit, involvement in College and ambassadorial skills.

Gili Bursary for Catalan Studies

This Bursary of £500 is available annual for any student undertaking studies or field work linked to the Catalan region of Spain.

Grants for Modern Language Students on their Year Abroad

The College offers the Denys Dyer Bursary (£1,000) each to students preparing to go on their year abroad to Germany to assist with the costs of being overseas, and the Chris Wood Scholarship (£1,000) for students undertaking a year abroad in France.

Travel Grants

A wide range of travel grants (£100-£500) are available for undergraduate students undertaking travel during the vacations. Application is in Michaelmas and Hilary Terms.

Internship Bursaries

A small number of internship bursaries are available for students undertaking internships during the summer vacation. Preference is given to those undertaking unpaid positions or who will have unusually high living costs as a result of the placement. These are currently funded through gifts to the Annual Fund.
