Courses & Teaching

The College is above all an academic institution, and we take academic performance very seriously. Our purpose is to provide an environment in which all our members can work at their intellectual best, and achieve things which they may not themselves have thought possible.

Most of our undergraduate teaching is done by teaching Fellows of the College, and much of it takes place within College. Science students will naturally spend a good deal of their time in the labs, but, even so, the College is responsible for teaching them.

The thing which continues to mark out teaching in Oxford is our commitment to tutorials, in which students are taught singly or in pairs. Preparing the work for the weekly tutorial remains most undergraduates' most binding academic responsibility. Their tutors direct their work, and take a personal interest in each pupil's academic career. They get to know their students very well, and are well placed to advise them individually. Most undergraduates also have the opportunity of taking certain special subjects with tutors from other colleges, enabling them to benefit from the huge range of expertise available in Oxford. Tutorials are supplemented by a programme of lectures and classes organised by the University, some of which take place in the College's own lecture and seminar rooms.
