Engineering Sciences

The Course
The Engineering Science and the Engineering, Economics and Management courses are four-year courses, both leading to an MEng degree. The first year is common to both courses, and with tutors’ permission it is possible to switch between the two at the end of the first year. The Engineering Science (ES) course then covers a wide range of disciplines with core papers in Maths, Electrical and Information Engineering, Structures, Materials and Mechanics, and Energy Systems. In the third year and fourth years students begin to specialise, choosing options from a range covering all aspects of the core disciplines of Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Information and Control, Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. In these years design and practical projects are also undertaken. All courses are fully accredited by the relevant Engineering institutions.
The Engineering, Economics and Management (EEM) course combines the core material from the ES course with courses in Economics and Management. Typically half of the fourth year is spent on a management placement within industry. See Economics for further information.
The College regards practical training as essential to every Engineer’s education and encourages all students to gain industrial experience during the long vacations. Within the College, Professor Reid teaches Mathematical, Electrical, Control and Computing subjects, while Dr Petrinic covers topics in Mechanics, Structures and Materials.
Careers
Although many graduates find excellent careers in Engineering, career prospects are not confined to technology. Significant numbers move into research, teaching or finance and commerce. Others move on to Management after a few years in Engineering.
