Alumnus Lord Green (1966, PPE), Honorary Fellow, former Minister of State for Trade and Investment, and former group chairman of HSBC Holdings plc, will discuss his new book, The Human Odyssey: East, West and the Search for Universal Values, with Rector Professor Sir Rick Trainor and Professor Peter Frankopan (Oxford Professor of Global History, Director of the Oxford Centre for Byzantine Research, Fellow of Worcester College, and author of The Silk Roads: A New History of the World [Bloomsbury, 2015]).
Stephen Green’s new book (SPCK, 2019) analyses the crucial latest stage of human self-discovery: the realisation that everything we do affects everyone and everything else. The next century, Green argues, will bring unprecedented opportunities and risks for all countries. The discussion will assess how far the worldviews of the two superpowers – fundamentally Confucian China and the essentially individualist USA – can work together despite rising tensions. The discussion will also deal, as does the book, with the implications of worldwide urbanisation. Throughout, there will be attention to the consequences of these trends for the human spirit as well as for the world around us. This event will serve as a book presentation, with copies of the book on display and available for purchase and signing by the author.
Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.
