Academic background

Annabel earned her undergraduate degree in Modern Languages at Durham University, before coming to Oxford to study for the Master of Studies in Spanish, where she specialised in the Golden Age. She remained at Oxford for her doctorate, funded by the Santander Scholarship for Spanish Studies, and her recently completed thesis explores the presentation of court favouritism in theatre written during the reign of Philip III (1598-1621).

Undergraduate: Annabel teaches all aspects (both literature and language) of the first year Spanish course at Exeter. For the Final Honour School, she teaches Unseen Translation (Paper II) and the Golden Age literature papers (VII and X).

Research interests

Annabel’s research interests lie in the Spanish Golden Age, especially that period’s drama. She is especially interested in presentations of kingship, power and politics, and the stage’s ability to comment on and participate in the political dialogues and intellectual thoroughfares of the seventeenth century.
