Stanley Johnson (1959, English) enters the jungle for ITV’s I’m a Celebrity
Exeter alumnus Stanley Johnson (1959, English) is currently taking part in popular reality TV show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!
In what is thought to be a first among Exeter’s alumni, Stanley has entered the infamous Australian jungle to compete against 11 other celebrities for the crown of king or queen of the jungle. The celebrities have to survive without luxuries for up to three weeks and take part in trials where they can win extra rations for the campmates to eat. The trials include overcoming fears of heights, insects and rats.
Viewers can vote for who they want to take part in the trials and also who they want to remain in the jungle, deciding ultimately who is the king or queen of the jungle as one by one the contestants are evicted. Seventy-seven-year-old Stanley is a former politician and an author, his latest book a novel called Kompromat. A committed environmentalist, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Exeter College in 2013 and also in 2011 to raise funds for The Gorilla Organization. Stanley is currently the bookmakers’ fourth favourite to win I’m a Celebrity.
