The inside perspective: Oscar’s experience of working at Exeter College

1. How long have you worked at Exeter College?

Just over four years.

2. What does your role involve?

I work as one of the Assistant Hall Supervisors, within the Catering team. I am therefore responsible for making sure that everything is in place for catering functions taking place in College, including dinners, conferences, and other events in the Dining Hall. On a day-to-day basis, I supervise a team of catering staff, to ensure that we maintain the highest possible quality standards, and that we provide the happiest possible experience for our guests.

3. What is the best thing about your job?

I love serving our guests, and it makes me feel good when we do our jobs properly. I find it particularly rewarding when we have provided such a great service that our guests come up to me and say ‘thank you’ after an event. Not all jobs give you this satisfaction!

4. What do you love about working at Exeter College?

I love the people that work here! It is a very good environment in which to work, and I like that we can talk to a range of people from other departments, as well as getting to know College members (e.g. students, academic staff, etc).

5. What development opportunities have you had at Exeter College?

When I started working for the College, I was employed as a Food and Beverage Assistant. However, about a year ago I applied for the role of Assistant Hall Supervisor, and was successful – I was therefore promoted into my current role. It felt great to be promoted!

I have also attended various courses since I started working at the College, and also had the opportunity to attend some English language classes.
