A year of improvements to Exeter College’s buildings and spaces

Over the past academic year, significant work has taken place across Exeter College to maintain and improve its buildings, enhance facilities for students and staff, and improve the environmental performance of the College estate.

A much-needed refurbishment of the MCR kitchens was completed earlier this year, while the first phase of renovations to Palmer’s Tower transformed a residential set and auxiliary spaces into two teaching offices, a meeting room and new welfare facilities. The project also included improvements to the building’s environmental performance and infrastructure. A second phase is planned for summer 2027.

Extensive work has also taken place in the Thomas Wood buildings, including the replacement of single-glazed windows with double glazing, roof repairs and insulation, and the installation of photovoltaic panels. A structural problem with the building’s stone cladding was identified during the project, allowing substantial remedial work to be carried out at the same time.

At Stapledon House on Iffley Road, the College has begun a phased programme to conserve and improve its Victorian buildings. Work to 220 and 222 Iffley Road has included roof insulation, upgraded windows, new rooflights, conservation-style guttering and repairs using traditional lime mortar. The improvements are intended both to preserve the character of the buildings within the St Clement’s and Iffley Road Conservation Area and to improve comfort and energy efficiency. Further phases will include work to 224 and 226, alongside plans for improved kitchens, bathrooms, common rooms, laundry and cycle facilities.

Elsewhere, offices, bedrooms and communal areas have been refreshed, including spaces in Cohen Quadrangle, the Bursary and the Rector’s Lodgings. The AV system in the Fitzhugh auditorium has been upgraded and work on its roof is in progress. Work also continues in the Fellows’ Garden, where paths, planting, the pond and lawn are being renewed and drainage improved.

Together, these projects form part of the College’s continuing work to care for its historic estate while ensuring its buildings and spaces meet the needs of current and future generations.
