Getting to Exeter College

Oxford has traffic restrictions that restrict car journeys along certain roads at particular times. Please plan your route before setting off to avoid unexpected fines.

Public transport and Park and Ride

Central Oxford has limited parking, and we encourage visitors to use public transport wherever possible.

If you are travelling by car, Oxford’s Park and Ride services offer a convenient alternative to driving into the city centre. You can park outside central Oxford and complete your journey by bus.

Driving to Exeter College

Exeter College remains accessible by car without passing through Oxford’s traffic filters. However, your route matters, and you may need to take a different route from the one you would normally use.

For visitors driving to Exeter College’s main site on Turl Street or to Cohen Quadrangle on Walton Street, approaching central Oxford from the north via Banbury Road or Woodstock Road is generally a good option to avoid the traffic filters provided you do not use the Marston Ferry Road.

For accommodation at Exeter House and Stapeldon House on Iffley Road, approaching from the south via Rose Hill or Donnington Bridge Road is generally a good option for avoiding the traffic filters.

How can I avoid a fine?

  • Plan your route in advance. Check Oxfordshire County Council’s traffic filter information, including its map of restricted roads.
  • Check your satnav. Navigation apps may not always account for traffic restrictions. Selecting ‘avoid tolls’ may help, but does not guarantee a permitted route.
  • Look out for traffic restriction signs. Traffic filters are marked by road signs rather than physical barriers, and other vehicles may be permitted to pass through.
  • Allow extra time. Your journey may take longer than expected, particularly if you need to avoid restricted roads.
  • Apply for a permit in advance. Some people, such as local residents and Blue Badge holders, may be eligible for a traffic filter permit. Information about exemptions and permits is available on the Oxfordshire County Council website.

Check the latest traffic restrictions

Oxford’s traffic restrictions, operating times and road layouts may change.

Before travelling, please consult Oxfordshire County Council’s traffic filter guidance for the latest information, including maps and exemptions.

Please note: The College provides this information to help visitors plan their journeys, but cannot guarantee that a particular route will be free from restrictions.
