Exeter College alumnus Mike Gray (1962, Modern History) publishes latest book

Exeter College alumnus Mike Gray (1962, Modern History) has published his latest book, Heads & Tales, offering a lively and personal account of the headteachers who shaped his education and career in the grammar school system.

A former sixth-form college principal, Gray reflects on his experiences as a pupil, assistant master, and vice principal, weaving together memoir and educational history. His book charts the evolving role of headteachers in the second half of the twentieth century and tells it with insight and humour. As well as capturing the personalities of four headmasters and one headmistress, Gray paints a vivid picture of a more relaxed and characterful era in English education.

Heads & Tales also highlights the Exeter connections of several individuals featured in the book. Among them are Michael Wood (1941, French) and Denis Holman (1949, Modern History), both old Exonians of an earlier generation. Gray also acknowledges the contributions of John Armstrong (1962, English), a contemporary of his, and the late Peter Dilloway (1964, Metallurgy & Science of Materials), both of whom receive brief mentions.

Heads & Tales offers a nostalgic and thoughtful contribution to the history of post-war education in England, and Exeter College warmly congratulates Mike on the publication of this latest book.
