Exeter College alumnus appointed Dean of Wakefield

Exeter College is delighted to share that the Revd Canon Dr Philip Hobday (1999, Modern History) has been appointed the next Dean of Wakefield Cathedral.

Philip arrived at Exeter in 1999 to read Modern History before training for ministry in the Church of England. He later completed doctoral work on the theologian Richard Hooker and has since held a number of significant roles in parish ministry and higher education, including serving as Chaplain and then Dean of Chapel at Magdalene College, Cambridge, and as Vicar of Earley in the Diocese of Oxford.

Speaking of his time at Exeter, Philip writes, “Exeter didn’t just teach me knowledge or introduce me to lifelong friends, though it did both those things; it showed me what is possible when people learn, work, and live together in a community, and I have drawn on that lesson in parishes, chaplaincies, and now our cathedral.”

In 2022 he joined Wakefield Cathedral as Sub-Dean and Canon Missioner. His appointment as Dean recognises his contribution to the Cathedral’s life and his leadership within the Diocese of Leeds. He will be installed on Saturday 7 March 2026.

Speaking on his appointment, Philip said:
“Wakefield Cathedral is an amazing place where a wonderful team, along with our many volunteers and congregations, pray and serve together. My vision is that the Cathedral continues to be a spiritual home for all, lifting up our eyes to see the hope and possibility we have only because of what God has done – and continues to do – in Jesus Christ.”

The Dean of Wakefield leads the Cathedral’s worshipping life, staff, volunteers, and partnerships across the city and wider diocese. Philip’s experience in parish ministry, scholarship, and the university context positions him well to guide the Cathedral through its next chapter.

Exeter College warmly congratulates Philip on his appointment and wishes him every success in his new role.
