Exeter College alumnus publishes insightful guide for school leaders

Exeter College alumnus Mike Ion (2018, MSc in Learning & Teaching) has published Values in Action: A Compass for School Leaders, a timely and practical guide for educational leaders seeking to build values‑driven school cultures. The book was published in September 2025 and is available in paperback and digital formats.

Drawing on his extensive professional experience as a former secondary headteacher, Director of Education for a large Multi‑Academy Trust, and Deputy National Director for School Improvement at the Department for Education, Ion offers a clear and engaging roadmap for leaders at all stages of their careers. Values in Action emphasises ethical leadership, inclusive school culture, and effective communication as cornerstones of successful leadership in complex educational environments.

The book combines real‑world examples with reflective exercises and actionable strategies. Core topics include fostering collaboration and trust within school communities, promoting staff wellbeing, managing performance with integrity, building strong relationships with parents and governors, and sustaining long‑term improvement. Ion’s work also highlights the importance of self‑reflection and personal resilience for leaders navigating demanding roles.

Values in Action: A Compass for School Leaders has been well received for its practical insights and accessible style, making it an essential resource for new and aspiring headteachers, deputy heads, assistant heads, and senior leaders seeking to lead with purpose and clarity.

Values in Action: A Compass for School Leaders is available to purchase for Waterstones and other booksellers.
