Exeter College alumnus publishes third novel in New Rock series

The third book in the New Rock fantasy series by Exeter College alumnus Richard Sparks (1970, English) has now been published. New Rock, New Rules continues the adventures set in the richly imagined realm of Jarnland, a world of shifting alliances, dark secrets, and unexpected heroes.

Richard is an accomplished comedy writer, lyricist, librettist, author, and director. He has written for Rowan Atkinson and been commissioned by the Los Angeles Opera. Though best known for his work in television and opera, his move into fantasy fiction has drawn praise for its originality and humour.

In this latest instalment, Jarnland is plunged into turmoil following the death of King Wyllard. Into the void steps Esmeralda, a luminous, ambitious, and ruthlessly clever figure who swiftly outmanoeuvres her rivals and declares a new order. Meanwhile, the legendary warrior Commandant Bastard faces his fiercest challenge yet: a duel with the fearsome Grell, a clash that grips the city of Eastbay and threatens to tear apart fragile alliances.

The New Rock series draws inspiration from Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) and combines epic storytelling with playful wit. Sparks has described the books as “high adventure spiced with low comedy.”
