Exeter Fellow completes advanced expedition medicine training for Svalbard expedition

Staines Medical Research Fellow at Exeter College, Dr Lukas Krone has completed intensive, specialized training in wilderness and expedition medicine. This advanced preparation is essential for his role as the expedition medic for the upcoming Oxford 100 Arctic Expedition to Svalbard.

The Oxford 100 Arctic Expeditions are a multi-year series of science-driven expeditions organized by the Oxford University Exploration Club (OUEC) to commemorate its centenary. This long-term initiative aims to advance cutting-edge scientific research in fields like glaciology, biomedical research, and climate change. Dr Krone’s participation in the Svalbard expedition is one of the three 2026 “Reconnaissance Expeditions,” high-latitude projects in Greenland, Iceland, and Svalbard that require expert medical coverage due to the inherent risks of the remote polar environment.

Dr Krone recently completed a key training module with the Swiss Society for Mountain Medicine (SGGM) in the Bernese Highlands. This autumn session covered essential rescue techniques, including managing crevasse and climbing accidents and specialized helicopter rescue training. He joins a cohort of medical professionals who will soon support extreme events or embark on expeditions.

With the completion of these modules, Dr Krone has now finished the core components for the International Certificate in Wilderness and Expedition Medicine. The comprehensive program also included critical training in traumatology, hypothermia, altitude sickness, avalanche rescue, and pain management.

Dr Krone’s specialized medical training has been generously supported by Exeter College, where his own research investigates sleep-regulatory mechanisms in mice with the aim of developing novel treatments for sleep disorders.

Exeter College extends its full support to Dr Krone for his vital work on the Svalbard expedition.
