Exeter Supernumerary Fellow contributes evidence on assisted dying bill

Professor Charles Foster, Supernumerary Fellow at Exeter College, recently appeared before the parliamentary Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill Committee. He provided expert oral evidence to the Select Committee regarding the proposed assisted dying legislation.

Professor Foster specializes in Medical Law and Ethics, and his submission focused on the foundational ethical and legal challenges of the bill. His research takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from moral philosophy and neuroethics to explore the limitations of the principle of autonomy in complex medical decisions.

His evidence addressed the necessity of establishing sufficient protective boundaries and safeguards within any new legislation. His arguments caution against legalizing measures that might create “No Safe Territory” for vulnerable patients. Professor Foster’s participation ensures that deep academic and legal analysis is brought to bear on a debate that has drawn increasing national media attention.

As a practicing barrister and part-time judge, Professor Foster brings a unique blend of legal and ethical experience to this complex public policy issue.
