Exeter’s Jackson Library Triumphs with Four Wins at the RIBA South Awards

Exeter College’s Jackson Library has achieved a remarkable feat at the 2025 RIBA South Awards, securing four prestigious accolades, including the coveted Building of the Year. The comprehensive refurbishment, led by Nex Architecture in collaboration with conservation specialists Donald Insall Associates, has transformed the Grade II-listed neo-Gothic library into a light, accessible, and sustainable space that honours its historic roots while embracing contemporary design.

Constructed in 1857 to the designs of George Gilbert Scott, the library had suffered from structural deterioration and outdated facilities. The renovation addressed these issues through extensive structural alterations, including roof replacements, the introduction of new roof lights, and the addition of a 14-metre cantilevered timber mezzanine. A new Clipsham stone entrance and lift now provide universal access, while bespoke oak joinery seamlessly integrates with restored historic features.

The RIBA jury praised the project as an “intelligent renovation” that has “taken a tired listed building with limitations and turned it into a fresh, robust and light-filled environment for studying.” The design’s success lies in its meticulous attention to detail and the harmonious blending of old and new elements. New features, such as the balcony and bespoke furniture, carefully dovetail with the existing structural grid, while the annexe reading room’s balcony reveals original windows, respectfully acknowledging earlier adaptations.

Rector Dr Andrew Roe CB remarked, “Picking up not one but four RIBA South Awards, including the prestigious Building of the Year, is a remarkable tribute to the vision, creativity, and craftsmanship behind the transformation of Exeter College’s Jackson Library. The joy our students take in using the revitalised space is evident every day, and these accolades further recognise the outstanding work of Nex Architecture, conservation experts Donald Insall Associates, and the dedicated staff and Fellows of the College.”

The Jackson Library’s success at the RIBA South Awards underscores Exeter College’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage while providing state-of-the-art facilities for its students. The project will now be considered for a RIBA National Award, with winners to be announced on 10 July.
