Professor Jonathan Herring Publishes New Editions of Leading Law Textbooks

Professor Jonathan Herring, DM Wolfe-Clarendon Fellow in Law and Professor of Law at Exeter College, has recently released new editions of three of his most widely used legal textbooks: Medical Law and Ethics (10th edition, Oxford University Press), Criminal Law (14th edition, Bloomsbury), and Family Law (12th edition, Pearson). These landmark publications continue to shape legal education and scholarship in the UK and beyond.

Herring is known for his distinctive approach to legal analysis, combining doctrinal clarity with a focus on ethics, care, and relationality. Across these latest editions, he addresses some of the most pressing legal and societal issues of our time, ranging from developments in consent and domestic violence law, to challenges in medical decision-making, mental capacity, and family justice reform.

The new edition of Medical Law and Ethics provides updated discussions on patient autonomy, reproductive rights, and healthcare regulation, reflecting ongoing shifts in bioethics and public health. Criminal Law, now in its fourteenth edition, engages with recent statutory and case law changes while continuing to explore moral questions that underpin criminal responsibility. Meanwhile, Family Law offers a deeply thoughtful account of legal responses to relationships, children’s rights, and vulnerability in the modern family context.
