Professor Philippa Webb elected to prestigious Institut de Droit International

Exeter College Fellow by Special Election, Professor Philippa Webb, has been elected to the renowned Institut de Droit International (Institute of International Law). Founded in 1873, the Institut is dedicated to advancing the development and application of international law and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1904 in recognition of its work.

Membership of the Institut is regarded as one of the highest honours in the field of international law. With a lifetime appointment, the Institut limits its membership to just 132 individuals worldwide, ensuring that it remains an exclusive community of leading scholars and practitioners. Professor Webb was nominated for election by the UK National Group, highlighting her distinguished contributions to the field.

Professor Webb is widely recognised for her scholarship and practice in international law, including her expertise in international courts and tribunals, the law of state immunity, and human rights. Her election reflects her standing as one of the foremost figures shaping contemporary debates in the discipline.

Speaking about the honour, Professor Webb noted the significance of joining such a historic and influential body of international lawyers. She joins a distinguished line of scholars who have contributed to the development of legal frameworks that continue to shape global relations.

Exeter College is delighted to celebrate Professor Webb’s achievement and to recognise her exceptional contributions to international law. Further information about the Institut de Droit International and its work can be found on the Institut’s website.
