Exeter College is seeking a part-time Assistant Gardener to join its Gardens & Grounds team. This is an excellent opportunity to work within the unique and historic environment of an Oxford college, supporting the care and presentation of its gardens and outdoor spaces.
Working under the supervision of the Head Gardener, the Assistant Gardener will assist with the day-to-day maintenance of the College’s gardens, lawns, courtyards, and grounds. The role involves a wide range of practical horticultural tasks, and will suit someone who enjoys hands-on outdoor work and takes pride in maintaining attractive, well-kept spaces.
We are looking for someone with some practical experience of gardening or grounds maintenance (professional or substantial voluntary experience), a basic knowledge of plants and seasonal garden work, and the ability to carry out physical outdoor work in all weather conditions. You will be reliable, enthusiastic, and able to work both independently and as part of a small team.
A horticultural qualification (such as RHS Level 1 or 2) and experience in a formal or historic garden setting are desirable but not essential.
In return, we pay £14.05 per hour, as well as offering a generous annual leave allowance, access to excellent pension and healthcare/ dental schemes, and a free meal whilst on duty.
This is a fixed-term contract until 30 September 2026. The post is part-time, normally working 15 hours per week (over 2-3 days), with some flexibility over working days by agreement.
