Security & Access

Using your Card for Security Access

Within Exeter College's main site and its Iffley road premises, there are a number of security controlled doors. These doors are used to control entry to the premises and rooms within, to those authorised to enter.

You must always have your university card with you if you wish to enter these premises.

Certain doors will not allow you to enter. This will be because you do not have permission to enter this door.

How to use the card to gain entrance through a security controlled door

Swipe the mag stripe on the back of your card through the card reader on the door, (not too slow and not too fast).

If access is denied, the LCD display screen on the reader will show the reason why. You may have to swipe the card several times to make it work.

Reporting lost or stolen cards

It is essential to the security of everybody within the college (yourself, other students and staff), that you inform the college of the loss or theft of your card immediately. You must also report the loss or theft to the Head Lodge Porter or Night Porters, as soon as you are aware that your card is missing.

The Porters will place a block on the security system. Your card will then be barred from being used at all Exeter College sites.

The Porters may then issue you with a temporary replacement card. This card may only be used until you are able to contact the college office. Lost card replacements are charged at £10. This is paid via https://www.oxforduniversitystores.co.uk, by clicking on "Product Catalogue" and then "University Card Office". The College Office will be able to order you a new card. There is no charge for stolen cards, provided you notify the College Office of the Police Crime Number. You must hand over the temporary card upon delivery of your new University card, collected from the college office.

NOTE: Your temporary card is an Exeter College issued card. It will not let you gain access into any sites not controlled by Exeter College.

Extending the expiry date of your university card

The card has an expiry date in the bottom left hand corner. If you need to extend the expiry date you must order a new card from the college office. You must hand over the old card upon delivery of your new University card.

What to do if you are not granted access through a door

If your card does not let you into a door that you believe you have permission to enter, you should go to the Porters lodge and ask if they could check the doors which you are allowed access through. The Head Porter will then make any necessary changes.

What to do if your card consistently fails to work

Should this happen take your card to the Lodge. They will test your card, and issue you with a temporary replacement if your card is faulty.

If your card still fails to work, you should then order a new card from the college office.

NOTE: Your temporary card is an Exeter College issued card. It will not let you gain access into any sites not controlled by Exeter College.

You will need your card for entry to some departments and facilities around the university. Exeter College holds no jurisdiction over how your card is used outside Exeter college.
