1314 Society visits Botanic Gardens

Last Saturday, in the first of a new series of events for members of the 1314 Society, Exonians braved the fresh spring air to enjoy a private tour of the University of Oxford’s Botanic Gardens led by Simon Hiscock, Professor of Botany and Director of the Botanic Gardens.
Professor Hiscock gave a fascinating insight into the history of the gardens, their particular nature as a scientific garden and the use of the plants in contemporary teaching and research. With the Botanic Gardens’ 400th anniversary approaching – in 2021 – exciting changes are underfoot to engage and inspire visitors. Bibliophiles will be interested to learn of the creation of a new literary garden to celebrate some of Oxford’s most illustrious authors such as Lewis Carroll and Exonians J.R.R. Tolkien and Philip Pullman whose lives and works have a particular connection to the gardens.
