Alumnus Anthony Bale releases A Travel Guide to the Middle Ages
Anthony Bale (1994, English; 1998, DPhil English) has recently published A Travel Guide to the Middle Ages: The World Through Medieval Eyes. The book takes readers across the medieval world via the perspectives of scholars, spies, saints, and other travellers who journeyed from western Europe to the Far East and everywhere in between.
A Travel Guide to the Middle Ages is a feat of historical research using previously untranslated accounts from Turkey, Iceland, Armenia, north Africa, and Russia. It highlights where medieval peoples blurred the distinctions between the real and the imagined worlds. The book has been published in English, Dutch, and German, with many further international translations to follow.
Anthony Bale is a scholar of medieval literature, culture, and religion, and has published extensively in these fields. He is currently a Professor of Medieval Studies at Birkbeck, University of London and holds a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship to support his work on the Siege of Rhodes and the emergence of news writing in Middle English. From October 2024, he will be Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at the University of Cambridge.
