Fire is a very real threat to life and must be taken seriously. Watch the following videos as they form a part of the mandatory quiz that you will need to complete:
Oxford University Fire Safety Video
Fire Safety Rules
- Keep fire exits and routes clear at all times
- Keep fire doors closed when not in use
- Only smoke or vape in designated areas
- Do not obstruct or cover the fire alarms
- Only use permitted electrical items on College property
- Familiarise yourself with the Red Book for further rules and College regulations
Evacuation Procedure
If you discover a fire or signs of fire:
- Sound the alarm by operating a ‘break-glass unit’
- DO NOT try to recover your belongings
- Leave the building by the shortest and safest route possible
- Close all doors behind you as you evacuate (if possible and safe to do so)
- Inform the Porters at the Lodge that there is a fire either by going there or calling:
Porters’ Lodge Reception, Turl Street: 01865 279600
Front Desk, Cohen Quad:01865 610530
Exeter House:01865 245472
- Go to the Assembly Point (please familiarise yourself with where these are)
Exeter College (Turl St): Inside the Chapel (or on Broad Street if the Chapel is on fire or at risk)
Cohen Quad: Walton Lane
Exeter House: Pavilion - Once at the assembly point please remain there to be accounted for.
- DO NOT re-enter any building for any reason until authorised to do so by a Fire Officer.
Evacuation drills are a legal requirement and they are timed with roll-call often taken. Please treat every fire alarm as real as you may not be aware of the threat to your life. Failure to respond to an alarm will be treated as a serious disciplinary matter.
All electrical appliances brought to College or College-owned property must be declared and PAT tested.
PAT testing for 2024 will take place at the following times:
Dining Hall | October 14th & 21st | 9am -12 noon
Cohen Quad | October 15th & 22nd | 9am – 12 noon
Exeter House | October 16th & 23rd | 9am – 12 noon
A list of permitted electrical appliances can be found here:
Disciplinary action will be taken if you bring and use electrical items that are not permitted.

Cycling is at the heart of city life in Oxford, however doing so requires extreme care and attention. Exeter College is well-placed and so there is not necessarily a need to bring a bike, however should you wish to please familiarise yourself with the Highway Code and ensure to do the following:
- Wear a safety helmet
- Remember ABC: Air, Brakes, Chain and check that they are in good working order before setting off
- Plan your route
- Fit a bell to alert other road users of your presence
- Wear reflective clothing after dark
- Carry a small emergency toolkit
- It is a legal requirement to have working white front and red rear lights so carry spare batteries in your toolkit.
- Register your bike (you will receive College communications as to how to do this)
- Review the Green Guide’s cycling section
If you’ve not ridden before or would like to build your confidence, the University offers its students and staff 6 hours of free cycling training.
A daily and termly bike rental scheme can be found here
This quiz is mandatory for all incoming Exeter College new-starters and must be completed before the 1st of October.
You will first need to have read the Freshers’ Hub Guides, read the Red Book and Green Guide, understood the Health &Welfare guide on the Hub and watched the videos in full.
