College mourns death of Lady Wheare

Joan Lady Wheare, the widow of Rector Sir Kenneth Wheare, has died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 98. She died on November 4th.

Lady Wheare played a considerable role in looking after the welfare of Exeter’s students when Sir Kenneth was Rector of the College, between 1956 and 1972. She was exceptionally popular with students and is remembered as a fiery and formidable personality. She retained her lively interest in Exeter College to the end of her life.

The Oxford Mail published an interesting obituary of Lady Wheare which can be read here.
