College mourns the death of Emeritus Fellow Professor Ian Michael
Exeter College is very sad to report the death of Professor Ian Michael, on 24 July 2020. Ian Michael was King Alfonso XIII Professor of Spanish Studies, and a Professorial Fellow of Exeter, from 1982 to 2003, when he became an Emeritus Fellow of the College.
Educated at Neath Grammar School and King’s College London, Ian Michael took his PhD at Manchester in 1967. He held academic posts there and at Southampton, where he was Professor and Head of Department before taking up his appointment in Oxford, where he served (among other roles) as Chair of the Faculty Board. Professor Michael held a variety of positions in scholarly societies and institutions both in the UK and in Spain. He was also a Corresponding Member of the Royal Spanish Academy and a Commander of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. He was the author of many scholarly publications and, under the pseudonym David Serafin, several novels.
