Dr Andrew Roe is sworn in as Rector
At 11.30 am on 1 October, Exeter College’s new Rector, Dr Andrew Roe CB, was officially sworn into office.
The ceremony took place in Exeter College Chapel, presided over by Sub-Rector and Fellow in Classics, Dr Barnaby Taylor.
Dr Roe became Exeter College’s 131st Rector in the College’s 710-year history, taking over from Professor Sir Rick Trainor, whose term came to an end on 30 September.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Roe said: ‘I have been looking forward to today’s inauguration for a long time – and it hasn’t disappointed. What a wonderful occasion. Exeter is a truly remarkable and inspiring college. It transforms students, by delivering academic excellence, sharing knowledge across traditional subject boundaries, helping one another, and celebrating each other’s success. It is a remarkable place to live and work. Exeter graduates will undoubtedly help society meet the many challenges of the 21st Century. As Exeter College’s 131st Rector, I look forward to leading and serving such a vibrant, multi-disciplinary and welcoming college, building on the outstanding headship of Rector Trainor.’
Dr Roe holds a PhD from King’s College London and is the author of two books and a number of articles. He is also a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff College, the School of Advanced Military Studies, and the Higher Command and Staff Course.
Prior to joining Exeter College, Dr Roe was the Chief Executive and Commandant of the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, which educates students from the British armed forces, the Ministry of Defence, wider government, UK industry and overseas. Dr Roe was awarded a Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in September 2010 for distinguished service in Afghanistan and was appointed a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath in the 2022 Birthday Honours List.
Dr Roe has moved into the Rector’s Lodgings, accompanied by his wife, Pippa, and their spaniel, Mungo. We extend a very warm welcome to them all.
