Dr Dan Bassett wins 2024 McKay Hammer Award
Exeter alumnus Dr Dan Bassett (2010, DPhil Earth Sciences) has been awarded the McKay Hammer Award for 2024 from the Geoscience Society of New Zealand.
The Geoscience Society of New Zealand represents its community by providing collaborative leadership, advocacy, and information to connect people and Earth sciences within Aotearoa New Zealand and many of their awards have a long history and are named in honour of early geoscientists, with the McKay Hammer being the most prestigious award given. Named after Scottish born Alexander McKay, the McKay Hammer award dates to 1956 and recognises members of the society for their achievements and contributions to the geosciences.
Dr Bassett’s award recognises a sustained body of work that has significantly advanced the understanding of subduction zone structure and processes. Dr Bassett has led research on Hikurangi Margin crustal structure and the relationship between forearc structure and shallow megathrust slip behaviour as well as collaborating with others looking into the broader questions of intraplate volcanism and subduction zone slip behaviour.
Exeter College sends Dr Bassett warmest congratulations on this achievement. Read more about the McKay Hammer award here.
