Exeter alumnus Iain Sheridan publishes book on semiconductors

Exeter College alumnus Iain Sheridan (2005, MBA) has published a comprehensive new book, Semiconductors: Law, Strategy and Tax, offering a timely and in-depth examination of the legal and strategic frameworks shaping the global semiconductor industry.

Released in March 2025 by Edward Elgar Publishing, the 372-page volume provides an authoritative analysis of the complex legal landscape governing semiconductors. Sheridan, a barrister at Mountford Chambers with extensive international experience, compares regulatory approaches across the UK, EU, US, and Asia, addressing key areas such as intellectual property, competition, national security, sustainability, and taxation.

The book also explores strategic issues critical to the sector’s commercial success, including supply chain resilience and global industrial policy. Notable case studiessuch as ClientEarth v Shell Plc and the UK government’s handling of Nexperiaillustrate the intersection of law, policy, and innovation in this rapidly evolving field.

Early praise for the book highlights its clarity and relevance. David Willetts, Chair of The Foundation for Science and Technology and former UK Minister for Science, describes it as “a useful layperson’s guide to semiconductors” that also “provides advice to policymakers on how to promote this key technology.”

Iain Sheridan commented: “Whether you are planning a career in business, engineering, law, policymaking or science, semiconductors are increasingly the enabling technology across multiple sectors. I hope that some aspects of this book help to improve your strategic thinking.”

Semiconductors: Law, Strategy and Tax is available in hardback and digital formats from major booksellers, including Waterstones and Edward Elgar Publishing.

This publication marks another significant contribution from Sheridan, whose previous works include Financial Regulation and Technology – A Legal and Compliance Guide (2022) and chapters in Digital Assets Law and Regulation (2023) and Artificial Intelligence – Law and Regulation (2022).
