Exeter alumnus revives Ninth Doctor Who

Exeter alumnus Matt Fitton (1988, Classics and English) is reviving the Ninth Doctor Who in a new audio-series starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper.

The teaser to the latest Doctor Who audio-series from Big Finish Productions, The Ninth Doctor Adventures, begins by asking ‘do you want to come with us?’. Produced by Exeter alumnus Matt Fitton (1988, Classics and English), the promotional material emphasises togetherness.

Twenty years after the first series of the show’s TV revival, the audio adventures will star Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose, his companion. Fans will be ‘back on a trip of a lifetime’ as the ‘brilliant dynamic’ between the pairing is revived, and familiar characters such as Jackie Tyler make a reappearance.

Fitton describes ‘recapturing the spirit of that very special season’, as a ‘privilege’. He describes how the series will slot into the 2005 season: producing ‘a whole new run of stories with this brilliant duo’.

The Ninth Doctor Adventures is the latest in Fitton’s extensive writing career. He began working with Big Finish Productions in 2010, after submitting a piece to the company for a New Writers Opportunity. Since then, he has been involved with multiple Doctor Who and spin-off productions. He was a writer for Stranded, an audio series that saw the Eighth Doctor stranded, without the TARDIS, in London in 2020. The series won an Audie in 2021 for the Best Audio Drama. Fitton has also written for series beyond the Doctor Who franchise—he was nominated for the BBC Audio Drama Awards in 2015 for the first episode of Survivors, released in 2014.
