Exeter and Emmanuel celebrate nearly 90 years of friendship

Exeter College welcomed alumni and friends from its sister college, Emmanuel College, Cambridge, for a special dinner on Friday 6 November, celebrating a relationship dating back to 1937 – and finally honouring an invitation nearly 90 years in the making.

Around 150 guests gathered at Exeter for the joint celebration, including alumni of both colleges, their families, and representatives from the two institutions.

Exeter’s Rector, Dr Andrew Roe, welcomed guests alongside the Master of Emmanuel, Doug Chalmers, reflecting on the longstanding friendship between the colleges and the many personal connections that have developed over the decades.

The evening provided an opportunity to delve into the archives, unearthing some unusual details about the first gatherings between the two sister colleges. The first ever joint dinner, held at Exeter, was an out-and-out success. However, the return leg at Emmanual, in January 1937, had to be delayed for unforeseen circumstances.

Then Rector, Dr Marett, was accidentally shot during a rabbiting expedition. Fortunately, he recovered with what was described at the time as “miraculous rapidity” – although the dinner itself would have to wait. Thankfully no such incidents impacted on this particular evening.

In his welcome remarks, Dr Roe recalled the unusual history of the invitation and expressed his delight at finally bringing the two college communities together.

The occasion also provided an opportunity to celebrate the many connections between Exeter and Emmanuel. Among those attending were alumni who had studied at both institutions, as well as couples, siblings and families whose ties span the two colleges.

A silver loving-cup, presented to Exeter by Emmanuel in 1937 to mark their new relationship, was displayed at the dinner – a tangible reminder of a friendship that has endured for almost nine decades.

The evening brought together generations of alumni and friends, celebrating not only the shared history of two colleges, but also the personal relationships that continue to unite their communities.
