Exeter College Engineering Science graduate wins international award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
Exeter College alumnus Alfie Drew (2020, Engineering Science), who recently graduated with a first, has won an international award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for his final year project which was supervised by Exeter College Fellow, Dr Martin Davy.
Founded in 1880 by a small group of leading industrialists, ASME has continued to grow and is now a non-profit membership organisation that works to build collaboration, knowledge sharing, career enrichment, and skills development across all engineering disciplines, toward a goal of helping the global engineering community develop solutions to benefit lives and livelihoods. ASME also runs up to forty international conferences, which often feature advanced research and technical content spanning a range of industries impacted by mechanical engineering.
Within the forty international conferences lies the ASME Internal Combustion (IC) Engine Division, which holds the ICE Forward Conference. This annual event aims to promote the understanding, development, design, manufacture, and application of reciprocating internal combustion engines for our present and future societies. As part of the ICE Forward Conference, ASME holds the undergraduate research competition which is an annual event inviting undergraduate researchers to submit their work. If chosen as a winner, they deliver their presentation to a group of leading experts in the internal combustion engine field at the conference. Past recipients have frequently forged valuable connections at the conference, which have led to career opportunities and graduate school recruitment.
Alfie presented his final year project work on Life-cycle Analysis for Passenger Car CO2 Comparisons in the EU during the lunch time session of the conference. Along with the opportunity of delivering his project, Alfie also received $1,500 in travel and lodging expenses, allowing him to make his way to Texas with minimal difficulty and stress.
Exeter College sends warm congratulations to Alfie on a fantastic achievement.
