Exeter College Fellow awarded UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship

Associate Professor Sarah Howles, Supernumerary Fellow at Exeter College and Honorary Consultant Urological Surgeon, has been awarded a prestigious UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Future Leaders Fellowship to support her research into kidney stone disease.

Future Leaders Fellowships are designed to support talented researchers and innovators as they develop ambitious programmes of research and establish themselves as leaders in their fields. The scheme provides long-term funding and flexibility, enabling Fellows to pursue innovative and challenging projects while developing their research teams and professional skills.

Funded by UKRI, the programme supports researchers and innovators from across universities, businesses and other organisations throughout the UK. Fellowships are initially awarded for four years, with successful Fellows able to apply for a further three years of support. The programme encourages interdisciplinary research and gives Fellows the freedom to pursue new directions as their work develops.

Professor Howles is an academic urologist in the University of Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences and Radcliffe Department of Medicine, where her research focuses on understanding the causes of kidney stone disease. Her work combines large-scale population based studies with laboratory research to investigate the biological mechanisms underlying the condition, with the aim of developing better approaches to its prevention and treatment.
