Exeter students help Oxford secure draw in Varsity Rugby Match
Exeter students Megan Isaac (2019, PPE) and Jessica Abele (2019, DPhil candidate in Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics) helped Oxford claim a 10-10 draw with Cambridge in the 2022 Varsity Rugby Match at Twickenham Stadium on 2 April.
In a tense and fiercely fought match at the home of English rugby, captain Jessica Abele led the Dark Blues to a very creditable draw, Cambridge having been the favourites going into the game after winning the last four Women’s Varsity Matches.
Megan scored Oxford’s first try to level the scores at 5-5 shortly before half time. Towards the end of the second half she received special mention for her strong performance from the live commentary team when they picked their player of the match, Oxford teammate Lauren Webb.
It was the first time an Exeter student has been captain in the Women’s Varsity Match. It was also the first time the Match has ended in a draw.
Speaking after the game Jessica said: ‘We definitely go away from here with our heads held high. We put in an incredible performance and I couldn’t be more proud of my squad.’
