Exeter’s rugby team misses out on Cuppers glory

Exeter College’s rugby team made it to the final of the Cuppers Bowl this term, but fell just short of lifting the trophy.

Exeter beat Balliol College RFC in a nail-biting semi-final, 36-34, to set up a final against Pembroke College, who had thrashed a combined Merton-Mansfield side 70 points to 15 in their half of the draw.

A hard-fought first half at the University’s rugby ground closed with the score 9-8 to Pembroke. Tries from Mark Hanna (2015, Medicine), Will Osborne (2017, Earth Sciences), and Harry Morgan (2014, Modern Languages) sadly couldn’t prevent Exeter ultimately losing by 30 points to 18. Congratulations to Pembroke, who crowned a great day by winning the Women’s Rugby Cuppers trophy as well. Exeter will return to the field hungry for success in October.
