Film critic Philip French (1954, Jurisprudence) dies

The acclaimed film critic Philip French OBE, who read Jurisprudence at Exeter College in the 1950s, has died at the age of 82. He wrote for The Observer for 50 years and was the newspaper’s chief film critic for 35 years, until his retirement in 2013.

His successor at The Observer, Mark Kermode, described French as “an inspiration to an entire generation of film critics”.
