Out now: Rector’s Seminars for Trinity Term 2019
Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter, addresses students and fellows at a seminar in 2018
An exciting programme of speakers has been announced for the Trinity Term Rector’s Seminar series. We are delighted that we will welcome speakers including co-founder of Twitter Biz Stone, political scientist Professor Joseph Nye, and Lord Macpherson GCB, who served as Permanent Secretary to the Treasury from 2005 until 2016.
All of the talks are free to attend and alumni and current members of the University of Oxford are most welcome.
Biz Stone, who helped to establish blogging sites Twitter and Medium, will talk about ‘How Good Luck, Timing, and Ten Years of Trying Can Make You Look Like an Overnight Success’. Professor Nye, a greatly respected political scientist and former dean of the John F Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, will discuss ‘Presidents, Ethics, and Foreign Policy’. Lord Macpherson, who is the current chairman of C Hoare & Co, the United Kingdom’s oldest privately owned bank, will speak on ‘Some Reflections on Economic and Financial Crises (1914-2008)’.
The term’s seminars will also include a poetry reading from Professor James Arthur, comment on the current state of British party politics from Exeter Fellow in Politics Dr Michael Hart, a look at the gender gap in Oxford’s exam results by Professor Dennis Ahlburg, and a study of the evolving role of the IMF from Sean Hagan.
There is no need to book, simply report to the Porters’ Lodge on arrival.
