Professor Frank Close publishes Eclipse ― Journeys to the Dark Side of the Moon

Exeter College Emeritus Fellow in Physics Professor Frank Close has published Eclipse ― Journeys to the Dark Side of the Moon with Oxford University Press.

The book describes the spellbinding allure of this beautiful natural phenomenon, explains why eclipses happen, reveals their role in history, literature and myth, and focuses on eclipse chasers, who travel with to some of the most inaccessible places on the globe to be present at the moment of totality. It also includes Professor Close’s quest to solve a 3000-year-old mystery: how did the moon move backwards during a total solar eclipse, as claimed in the Book of Joshua?

Eclipse is also a personal story, revealing how a teacher and an eclipse inspired Professor Close, aged eight, to a life in science, and instilled a passion for eclipses which has taken him to a war zone in the Western Sahara, to the South Pacific and to the African bush. The tale comes full circle when Professor Close takes his eight-year-old grandson to the 2017 eclipse in North America.
