Professor Keith Channon secures £5 million funding boost for cardiovascular research

Professor Keith Channon, the Field Marshal Earl Alexander Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Exeter College and Head of the University’s Radcliffe Department of Medicine, has successfully led a bid for a British Heart Foundation (BHF) Research Excellence Award. The £5m award will support the BHF Oxford Centre of Research Excellence, a collaborative grouping of more than 80 research groups working in cardiovascular sciences across 16 Departments, co-led by Professor Angela Russell, the Bernard Fellow in Chemistry at St John’s College.

‘We are delighted to receive this new BHF Award’, Professor Channon comments, ‘which allows us to extend our connections between academic disciplines, work with industry partners, and pioneer a new entrepreneurship and innovation training programme to accelerate the development of future diagnostics and treatments for cardiovascular diseases’.

Professor Channon is also Director of Oxford Academic Health Partners, chairs the NIHR-BHF Cardiovascular Partnership across the UK and has previously served as Associate Head of the Medical Sciences Division and Director of R&D at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. His research focuses on the causes and development of vascular diseases, linking laboratory science with clinical translation. He was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2009.
