Professor Luciano Floridi helps shape how we think about Artificial Intelligence

Luciano Floridi, Fellow of Exeter College and Professor of Philosophy and Ethics of Information at the Oxford Internet Institute, continues to be a prominent voice in his field, helping to shape how we think about the ethics of Artificial Intelligence and digital technology.

In 2019, his book The Logic of Information—A Theory of Philosophy as Conceptual Design was published by Oxford University Press. It presents an innovative approach to philosophy, conceived as conceptual design, exploring how we make, transform, refine, and improve the objects of our knowledge. The book has been a great success and was awarded the Premio Udine Filosofia at the Mimesis Festival in 2020. This award is one of many that Floridi has received in recent years, which include the Premio Socrate for philosophical communication in 2020, and the CogX Award, for “outstanding achievement in ethics of AI” in 2019.

Professor Floridi has continued to develop his theory of philosophy as intellectual design by publishing two further books on the matter in Italian: Il Verde e il Blu: Idee Ingenue per Migliorare la Politica (Milano: Cortina, 2020), and Pensare l’Infosfera – La Filosofia come Design Concettuale (Milano: Cortina, 2019).

Beyond his academic research, Professor Floridi has also been appointed as a Board member in a range of fields. In 2020, he was appointed as a member of the Advisory Board of the Institute of AI at the Foreign Office, UK. This year, he has also taken up posts as Chair of the Ethics Board of the Cluster Science of Intelligence for the German Excellence Initiative, as well as President of the IFAB International Scientific Board.

In March we were delighted to welcome Professor Floridi for a webinar about his research. You can watch Professor Floridi’s talk below or on YouTube by clicking here.
