Professor Nandini Das to publish book on empire in India

Tutorial Fellow in English Professor Nandini Das’s debut book, Courting India: England, Mughal India and the Origins of Empire, will be published by Bloomsbury on 16 March 2023. Exploring a watershed encounter in the history of colonialism, Courting India is a ground-breaking look at the British arrival in India in the early 17th century. Professor Das follows Thomas Roe, James I’s first ambassador to the Mughal Empire, as a means of understanding the germination of the British empire. Courting India poses a profound challenge to our current understanding of the development of the culture of early British empire.

In the leadup to its release, Professor Das’s book has garnered much praise. The Financial Times has named Courting India in its list of ‘Books to read in 2023’. Award-winning author Dr Pragya Agarwal has described it as ‘Startlingly eye-opening … If we want to truly understand the impact and legacy of the British Empire on our modern world, we have to start where it all began.’

You can pre-order Courting India here. In the USA it will be published in April and more information is available here.
