Spring City Lecture on Tolkien’s Exeter draws large crowd

Exeter College’s 2014 Spring City Lecture took place on 25 February at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London, with many recent graduates as well as older alumni in attendance.

John Garth, Tolkien’s most recent biographer, gave a talk on ‘Tolkien at Exeter’ which touched on the great writer’s experiences at college, including his tumultuous courtship of the woman who would be his wife and the trauma of a classmate’s death.

Garth spoke to a diverse audience, containing not only alumni whose careers have led them into the fields of law, business, and finance, but also those who work in academia, publishing, secondary education, film and medicine.

John Garth’s book Tolkien and the Great War will be available to buy at Founder’s Day Weekend, and can be pre-ordered through the Development Office. Please email aileen.thomson@exeter.ox.ac.uk to reserve a copy.
