Turl Street colleges come together in Vienna

On Friday 24 April Jesus, Lincoln, Brasenose and Exeter colleges held a “Turl Street Colleges Dinner” in Vienna, Austria.  Thirty Oxford alumni and their guests squeezed into the upper restaurant of the historic Das Biedermaier-Restaurant – “Zu ebener Erde und erster Stock” in the heart of Vienna.  Some were Austrians while others had travelled from all over Europe to attend.

The name of the restaurant (“On the ground floor and on the first floor”) comes from a popular play by Johann Nepomuk Nestroy, one of Austria’s foremost playwrights of the 19th century.  The guests enjoyed hearty Austrian fare of braised duck, champagne cabbage and apple strudel, along with exceptional Austrian wines, all served by the restaurant’s ebullient owner.

During the evening, Lincoln’s Fellow and Tutor in Law, Dr Stefan Enchelmaier, thanked the guests for attending and everyone present raised a glass to “the best street in Oxford”.

The occasion was part of the University of Oxford’s European Alumni Reunion Weekend which took place in Vienna from 24-26 April.  During this time, nearly 450 Oxonians and their guests enjoyed a range of intellectual and social events, including academic presentations, walking tours, dinners, and a Viennese dancing lesson.

We are grateful to Lincoln alumnus Marcin Suskiewicz for all his help in arranging the Turl Street Colleges Dinner.
