The Scholarship will be awarded to the most meritorious candidate who has applied for graduate study in Classics at Oxford at or before the 18 January 2013 deadline, and has been accepted to read for a DPhil starting in October 2013. All eligible candidates will automatically be considered: no separate application is required for this Scholarship.

The John Ratcliffe Scholarship can be held only by a student at Exeter College. If the successful candidate has been offered a place at another Oxford College, they will be required to migrate (transfer) to Exeter College in order to take up this Scholarship. It is a condition of the Scholarship that the recipient remains at Exeter College, Oxford, for the duration of his or her course.
