Exeter’s college library is in the Fellows’ Garden at Turl Street. Built in 1857, it is an example of the Victorian Gothic style of architecture, with turrets and casement windows and twisty stone staircases. The building has just been extensively renovated and a lift has been installed to provide step-free access to all areas of the library. There are 88 reader places available across three floors. The library provides wireless connection throughout, and data and power sockets for readers’ laptops.

The library has c.40,000 books and journals, which cover all of the subjects studied by undergraduates at Exeter. Most of the books are available for loan. All of the library’s books are accessible via the University-wide library catalogue called SOLO (Search Oxford’s Libraries Online) http://solo.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/

There is also a closed collection of rare books and manuscripts kept at Cohen Quad, in the Special Collections Library, and students can consult these by arrangement with the College Librarian.

All members of Exeter College can use the college library for borrowing books and as a reading space. The library is open 24/7 and Readers can enter by swiping their Bod card at the library door.

Library Rules:

• No food or drink except bottled still water and hot drinks in keep-cups may be brought into the library.
• Quiet should be maintained and mobile phones should be switched to silent mode.
• Only members of Exeter College may be admitted to the library. Please do not bring students from elsewhere in the university or other guests.

Borrowing, renewing and returning books:

Use the self-issue machine on the ground floor of the library to borrow and return books.

Books that are currently on loan can be requested online on SOLO (you must log on with your Single Sign On). SOLO is also where you can renew books that you currently have on loan (under ‘my account’).

You may have up to 20 items on loan at any one time.

Undergraduates can borrow for 2 weeks, with the option of renewing up to 5 times if another reader does not require the book.

Graduates can borrow for a whole term.

Both undergraduates and graduates can borrow books for the whole vacation period.

All books must be returned by the due date. Fines for overdue items are 20p per book per day for undergraduates. Fines and costs of replacement of lost, damaged or defaced books are charged to the battels of the person responsible.

Other Resources

With your Single Sign On, you have access to a vast range of electronic books and resources. Use SOLO to access all of the electronic books and databases provided by the University.

With your University Card (Bod Card) you can also access the majority of Oxford’s faculty libraries, and the Bodleian library. Some of these libraries will let you borrow books whereas others are just for reference books and reading space.

The library aims to have a full range of material to support teaching. You are encouraged to suggest titles for purchase, or if you feel we need more copies of a particular title.
